Cork is the standard bearer for Irish industry in a number of key sectors including:
- Pharmaceuticals – Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson and Schering Plough are all based in the Cork metropolitan area
- Healthcare – Sector leaders, Boston Scientific, Stryker, Janssen and Centocor are all based in Cork
- ICT – Computer technology giants, Apple Computers and EMC2 both have large operations in Cork, employing 3,500 people between them
- Drinks and Beverages – Cork city has two major breweries, distils almost all of the major Irish Whiskeys, and PepsiCo has two major operations here
