ICT
Cork’s well-established ICT sector is led by an impressive selection of the world’s brand names.
Apple Inc. has had its European headquarters in Cork since the early Eighties and is one of the city’s largest employers. Its campus at Hollyhill includes a computer manufacturing plant as well as the company’s European call centre and an advanced R&D facility. Apple employs a total of 1,800 staff in Cork.
EMC2 Corporation, specialists in disk libraries and data management systems, is Cork’s other major ICT employer, with over 1,600 staff at its extensive manufacturing and technical services facility in Ovens, just outside the city.
Other major players in the IT sector based here include Alcatel, IBM, Logitech, McAfee, Sanmina-SCI, Siemens, Solar Winds and VMware.
Part of the appeal of Cork to such companies are the strong R&D links that exist between local industry and the region’s third-level colleges. The Tyndall Institute, established in 2004 as a joint initiative between UCC and the government, has proved invaluable in the services it offers to high tech industry and has been instrumental in positioning Cork at the forefront of new, emerging technologies.
